Madeleine Böckers

BACKGROUND:

During my medical technical laboratory assistant training at the Elisabeth hospital in Essen, I became very interested in medical research and natural sciences. Therefore, I chose to continue my education studying biomedical chemistry at the Johannes Gutenberg university in Mainz. Thereby, I expanded my knowledge and skills especially in chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacy.

THE GRK IS…

…a great opportunity to get in contact with people from different subject areas. The combined working methods and ways of thinking of all members of the GRK will provide new, interdisciplinary insights into each project.

MY GOAL IS…

…to promote the communication between natural sciences and humanities and to include new approaches to my project.

MY PROJECT…

…focuses on the influence of toxins, released from plastic litter into the oceans, on the human body. The term “Great Ocean Garbage Patches” describes the still increasing amount of plastic accumulations in the Oceans, leading to numerous fatal impacts on the aquatic ecosystem. I would like to discover the molecular effects of the released toxins as well as the boundary experiences derived from the environmental impact on humans.
